DAR Grant Awarded to the Friends of the Clarence Dillon Public Library

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently awarded a grant to the Friends of the Clarence Dillon Public Library for the digitization of the Day-Book Account of John Boylan, 1773 – 1774. John Boylan was a merchant who operated a successful general store in Pluckemin during the American Revolution. His ledger lists the names of his customers and their purchases which were recorded in the currency of the day – pounds, shillings, and pence. Many of those listed were soldiers and sympathizers during the American Revolution and this historical record has been used by local history researchers and genealogists. The digitized material and the original Day-Book are part of the Somerset Hills Historical Collection in the Anne O’Brien Historical Room at the Clarence Dillon Public Library. Funding for this project was made possible through the sponsorship of The Old White House – General Freylinghuysen-Colonel Lowrey Chapter, DAR, located in Whitehouse Station, NJ.

On September 4, CDPL hosted a visit from Janice Cerra, Regent, Old White House – General Freylinghuysen, Colonel Lowrey Chapter of the DAR.  Cerra (center) is shown holding the historic book and is joined by Patti Bellis, President of the Friends of the Clarence Dillon Public Library (left), and Library Director Sandy Putnam (right).
